The Charter Guidelines For Compassion

Two weeks ago, we introduced the Interfaithing community to Karen Armstrong’s passion project the Charter for Compassion; a wish that was granted to her last year when she won the TED prize.

On November 12, 2009, the Charter for Compassion was revealed to the world. With a clear-cut message, the charter defines what compassion is, how to apply it, and the importance of compassion in our current global situation. In essence, the charter calls on all citizens of this earth to unite for the common goal of bringing absolute justice, equity, and respect for all.

Since its release one week ago, the charter has been affirmed by over 17,762 people worldwide via the charters official website. The affirmers come from every corner of the earth, every age, and every religion. Included are influential religious leaders and celebrities such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama, H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu, Forest Whitaker, Goldie Hawn, and Peter Gabriel. Affirmers have also been posting their stories of compassion on the charter’s website. Over 251 stories have been told so far.

Below is the official Charter for Compassion, which is available for download at the charter’s website.

Very nice, I love the part that says: any interpretation that leads to violence or hatred is illegitimate.

I asked Karen Armstrong how she feels about the launch of The Charter and she replied, "The launch was a great experience and many people have affirmed the charter ~ but not enough! we know from facebook that many people are excited about the Charter, but they are not signing up. We really, really need you to do this. We want to create a ground swell from the grassroots; we are aiming to have a large number of signatures soon that will show the world that many many people want to see a more compassionate world in business, politics, the media and daily life. So please, please please go to the Website and affirm the Charter. Be part of this movement that is going to change the world."

Thanks for the response Karen and we'll be sure to encourage everyone to affirm!

It makes my heart sing to see people like Karen Armstrong who are making a difference in the world. I believe the people of this planet are yearning to return to what is the core of every religious, ethical and spiritual traditions. It's simply; treat others as we would like to be treated.

It is so important to teach kids compassion at an early age. With less and less young people attending traditional places of worship where values like compassion are taught, we need to still instill compassion in them another way.

I completely agree with him, we should be taught and teach compassion. It's something that 'we' under value but I think we should focus on.
