Posting an avatar

How do I add an avatar to my profile? I was able to get a photo, but I guess there is something else I need to do to get the avatar to appear.

I may not be doing something right. When I click on edit avatar, there is a message:
Your Current Avatar
No Avatar Specified
Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.

* Do not use an avatar Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.


There is no way to change it so that I can use an avatar.

I am sure that it is probably something I am not doing right. Any suggestions?
