It’s always great to talk about it, but what matters is taking the right action. No matter how much we talk about the Golden Rule and champion it, we must live by it. And everyone in the world must understand it and live by it as well.
I usually like to write and express myself and my thoughts for at least a few long paragraphs, but not today. Today I want to get feedback on The Golden Rule. What we need is for people to WANT TO LIVE BY THE GOLDEN RULE, not just ‘understand’ it while living their life the way they see most advantageous.
So please, lets make a BIG LIST of reasons WHY we should all live by the golden rule. And once we see all the pleasure and peace and love that will come about in the world, then living any other way will seem painful (look at the world and notice how much pain there already is going on everyday).
How will living by the Golden Rule make the world (and your life) a better place? Leave your comments and we will start a big list, after this short story.
I understood the Golden Rule very early in life, thanks to my father. I didn’t know it was the “Golden Rule” but it was. One day many, many years ago, my Dad and I were driving to get some breakfast together and there was a car on the side of the road that had its hood up, and clearly was having some mechanical problems. I was very hungry that morning, so when my dad pulled over to ask if the other driver needed some help, I was a little frustrated. I know it was mean of me, but I was a kid, and I was hungry! When my father got back in the car he said we would wait with the lady to make sure a tow-truck came and she was alright. I said “Oh she’ll be okay, lets eat!” but my father looked at me deep in the eyes and said “It’s important to do this Mitch, what if your Mother was in that position and needed help, you’d want someone to pull over and offer some help, wouldn’t you?” I answered “yes of course.” My father continued “Well that’s someone’s mother, or daughter, or sister, in that car and just like how you’d want someone to help your mother if something ever happened, we need to help her.”
So although we weren’t talking about the “Golden Rule” exactly, we were talking about putting out what we expected and hoped to get back. We put out our generosity and helping hands, in hopes that when the time comes for us or someone we know, to be in a tough situation, there will be helping hands and generosity to help them through.
Thanks for listening!
Mitch
