The Spiritual Revolution

What is spirit? “Spirito”, which in Latin means “breath”. Spirit is the life force present in each of us. The root word of “inspiration”, inspire, also means to “breathe in” suggesting that when we are inspired, we have breathed in God or the Divine Muse. Spirit is feeling fully alive, alert, and responsive to the moment. It is passion, authenticity and courage. It is God, or the Divine Voice that calls our name. When we disconnect from Spirit, we disconnect from ourselves and from everything that is meaningful. We begin to lose focus of what is truly important. We go through the motions, but we are not really living. We stop believing in our magnificence and we stop taking action across our bridge. Moving your life forward, therefore, depends on your ability to call Spirit into your life and dance with it, make it your friend.

Spirit is all around us. Synchronicities are linking people, places and events in ways that convince us that the Divine Mystery is present in our lives. As spiritual warriors we seek meaning, truth and enlightenment. In my workshops and retreats, I am noticing that people are taking a more spiritual approach to life. This is evident in their work, their career development, and their personal lives. They’re working hard to discover who they are and how to belong in the world.

This Spiritual age allows each of us to embrace “the Mystery” in our own way. We may not be going to church, or practicing any one religion, but we have, through our Spirituality embraced God. People just don’t want to know the divine, they want to experience it. We’re signing up for Kundalini yoga classes; we go to retreats for the soul, delving into past lives and reincarnation, practicing meditation, and spiritual ecstasy. We want wisdom.

Spirit has also entered the realm of relationships. There is more sharing and more vulnerability. In business, trust is the tool for the new economy. The deeper the relationship, the more trust. And the more trust, the more business clients will do with you.

And then there are those who are secretly spiritual but don’t want the neighbours to know, or the boss to know or the secretary to know. These are the people who are still in what I call the “spiritual closet.” I’ve met strangers on airplanes who after finding out what I do, have shared with me their deepest innermost convictions about God but told me they would never feel comfortable discussing these ideas with others. One gentleman, A CEO of a large utility company, told me he was coming back from a religious convention, but that his staff thought he was on a golfing trip. Another man at one of my seminars, a corporate type, had tears in his eyes when he shook my hand. “I never thought I’d hear the words “soul”, “spirit” and “God” at a government conference.” He said to me, “but it’s very refreshing. Thank you”. Spirituality is the waking up of the feminine within us and some men aren’t comfortable with this yet.

Nevertheless, Spiritual warriors are emerging to find community and engage in meaningful conversations about God, the sacred and spirit. Spirit has entered our lives. We’re evolving, shedding our old skin to emerge renewed, healed and ready to take the step.
